HHU – and action!
Christmas break: Saving energy together

Many members of Heinrich Heine University (HHU) will be taking holiday over the upcoming festive period. During this time, further energy saving measures will be implemented: Heating and ventilation systems will be ramped down. The self-study centre on campus will be open for all students who cannot study at home. And working from home as far as possible is recommended for the first week of January.

Additional energy saving measures apply over the Christmas break.

Back in October we informed you in a circular e-mail about the next energy saving steps, which HHU is obligated to implement. From 24 December 2022 to 1 January 2023, on-site operations – with the exception of essential technical work – will be suspended and all library sites closed. The self-study centre in building 26.21, level 01, which is operated by the University and State Library, will be open to students from 27 – 30 December 2022. This central learning area with 130 workspaces will be open between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. There is no need to reserve spaces, even in the group rooms. You can check how full the self-study centre is on the library homepage: www.ulb.hhu.de.

All other technical equipment such as heating and ventilation systems will be set to so-called restricted operation mode, resulting in a further lowering of the room temperature beyond the already reduced operating temperature of 19 degrees. So it was recommended at an early stage that employees take holiday or hours built up in the flexible working time system to cover this period. Where this is not possible or work must be performed during this period, employees may work from home. Special rules apply for the laboratory areas and the temperature will not be reduced here.

First week of January
In the lecture-free week from 2 – 8 January 2023, all University and State Library sites will be open again. The technical systems will run normally again during the operating hours defined for the buildings.

The President, Professor Dr Anja Steinbeck, and the Chancellor, Dr Martin Goch, appeal to all HHU members to actively support the measures and work together to realise an important contribution to overcoming the energy crisis.

Practical tip: Common structure
All working groups and departments are requested to exploit all potential for saving energy during this period, which has proven quieter in the past. For example, empty rooms should not be heated and technical systems that are not in use should be switched off or run in reduced operation mode.
